Yesterday, one of Trump’s few remaining lawyers claimed that Joe Biden’s victory was caused by a computer “algorithm,” part of a communist plot contrived by Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez (Hugo Chavez died seven years ago). It was so bonkers – as is Trump’s last-ditch bid to enlist state legislatures to overthrow the election results – that it brought to mind the fascist madness inside history’s most notorious bunker.

No, you have not tuned to The History Channel. But please join me in briefly revisiting the not so distant past. You’ll soon understand why:

“Life forgives no weakness!…A desperate fight retains its eternal value as an example…Someone who has no heir for his house would do best to have himself burned with everything that is in it...Every possible wrong has been inflicted upon me.”

-Adolf Hitler, 1945

And what about the shameless supplicants in his party who continued to enable him long after all was lost? Did they ever decide – finally – that enough was enough? German historian Joachim Fest has described the vibes in the bunker:

“Even now his entourage followed him almost without a murmur into the more and more transparent fantasies fabricated from self-deception, distortion of reality and delusion. One of the participants has reported that everyone was ‘psychically almost suffocated by this atmosphere of servility, nervousness and prevarication. Nothing was authentic there except fear.’ In spite of (Hitler’s) mistakes, lies, and misconceptions, his authority remained entirely unchallenged until the last hour...The role of the beaten man had never entered his repertory.”

That’s it. That’s my entire post.
